The Problem

A difficulty whitewater boaters face is choosing one of the two available rowing systems: oars with oarlocks or pins and clips. Both options present functional problems for the rower.

Pins and Clips

Blade is fixed at 90 degrees.
No ability to feather the blade by altering angle.
Oar shaft movement is limited in rotational and lateral directions.

Pins and clips stresses the joints of the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The system increases fatigue and pain while decreasing performance.

Oars & Oarlocks

No fixed limitations.
Unlimited oar shaft movement within the oarlock.
Rotational movement (around axis).
Lateral movement (lateral movement).
Unrestricted inward travel.

Anyone who uses oars with oarlocks in extreme conditions knows: the oar shaft slides out of the oarlock and ejects the rower.
